On my walk this morning, I picked up a couple heads of lettuce and a Kilogram of tomatoes.
Cost me 1380 pesos. Which translates into $2.70 U.S. Dollars.  Tody is August 4, 2008
Here there is no income tax.
But included in the price is the IVA (abreviación de Impuesto al Valor Agregado)
Here in Chile the IVA is 19 percent so on the purchase of 1380 pesos, the government will receive 262 pesos
from the vendor.
If you buy nothing, you pay no tax.
The yellow receipt  is called a "boleta". The customer receives a boleta for every purchase
even if it is only a package of potato chips.
And if the vendor does not give you a boleta, he can be shut down.
